March 21 was chosen as Down Syndrome Day not by chance, it has a symbolic meaning. In people with Down Syndrome, the 21st chromosome is divided into three parts, from which it was decided to consider the 21st day of the third month as Down Syndrome Day. Down syndrome was first described by the English physician Langdon Down in 1866, after whom it was named.Characteristics of people with Down Syndrome are poor muscle development, short stature, sloping eyes, and a deep line in the center of the palm of the hand.Children with Down Syndrome should be taught to lead their own lives, excluding any form of isolation. Such children are talented, very kind and sensitive. Those beautiful children immediately feel a sincere attitude towards them and do not accept lies. The Caroline Cox Rehabilitation Centre is attended by children with a variety of diagnoses, including children with Down Syndrome. Various specialists of the Rehabilitation Centre work with them: rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, pedagogues. They are also involved in art courses – pottery, painting, and sports. Visits to public places and playgrounds are often organized, the main purpose of which is to integrate children into society and to make the public aware of the existence of children with such characteristics. With the help of relevant professionals and family support they can learn to walk and talk, write and read, draw and play sports, have interests, go to school, in short they can do what any child can do. The child should communicate with as many people as possible; this should be done first of all through the kindergarten or school. This is the path that will help the child with Down Syndrome to develop and integrate into public life.
