St. Valentine’s Day or All Lovers’ Day is a holiday celebrated by Catholics around the world on February 14. It was first founded by Pope Helasius I in 496 and later removed from the Catholic calendar in 1969. It is now celebrated in about 100 countries around the world, mostly in the West. It is considered a working day for all countries though. Valentine’s Day was originally celebrated as a liturgical holiday dedicated to one of the saints of the early Christian period – in memory of St. Valentinius. The latter, according to the legend, was sentenced to death for secretly marrying the soldiers. Legend has it that he treated the jailer’s daughter in prison, whom he later fell in love with. It is mentioned that before the execution of his sentence he leaves a farewell letter to his beloved woman, at the end of which is written “Your Valentine”. Today St. Valentine’s Day is officially celebrated as Valentine’s Day in many countries of the world.
