Decubitus disease is a deadening of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and other tissues caused by long-term pressure. It occurs in weak, long-term bedridden patients in areas of the body where the skin is in direct contact with bone spurs. Deep, long-term non-healing bedsores occur as a result of spinal cord injuries, diseases accompanied by spinal cord compression, or damage to large nerves. Decubitus disease is most common in the coccyx, shoulder blades, heels, and elbows. A bed sore can also occur on the skin from the pressure of plaster casts, orthopedic prostheses and apparatus, on the oral mucosa from the pressure of dental prostheses, etc. The chances of bedsores are increased during anemia, vitamin deficiency and metabolic disorders. The occurrence of bedsores is facilitated by poor care, the unclean condition of the patient’s bed and bedding (especially if they are contaminated with feces and food residues), rough seams and folds, an uneven device or mattress placed under the body of a patient with a spinal cord injury, prolonged pressure in the area of bone spurs. Decubitus affects the skin (superficial Decubitus), subcutaneous tissue and muscles (deep Decubitus). There are 3 stages of development of the bed. 1. Hyperemia (redness of the skin) 2. Dry mortification 3. Wet mortification The main prevention of bedsores is proper care. If it is not contraindicated it is necessary to constantly change the position of the patient. Also, to lie down on a flat mattress with a seamless sheet. Place a rubber ring or nightcap under the sacrum and tailbone, and a cotton pad under the heels. Change wet, dirty linen immediately. Let’s try to follow the above mentioned tips and avoid complicating bedsores or their occurrence.
We are happy to inform you that during this difficult period The Rehabilitation Centre has managed to renovate the former baby room to a certain extent transforming it into a new professional training room. The ceiling and walls of the room have been completely changed and adequate lighting has been given. The main purpose of renovating the room was the lack of a suitable professional and educational property for continuing education and training in The Rehabilitation Centre, and there was a need to have a similar one. The acquisition of the educational property was organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross back in 2022, for which we are extremely grateful. It should be noted that the professional training of our specialists, continuous lectures and practical work on special medical simulations have already launched.
