Today is the International Day of the Suns.

Today is the International Day of the Suns.

March 21 was chosen as Down syndrome day not by chance, it has a symbolic meaning. People with Down’s disease have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome, hence it was decided to consider the 21st day of the third month as Down’s syndrome day. This syndrome was first described by the English doctor Langdon Down in 1866 after whom it was named.

There are three types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21, translocation, and mosaicism.

Trisomy 21 is the most common type of Down syndrome (95% of cases), in which the fetus has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two.

Mosaicism occurs when trisomy 21 occurs in one primary cell rather than all of them.

Translocation occurs in 4% of cases. In this case, part of the 21st chromosome breaks off during cell division and joins another chromosome, usually the 14th chromosome.

The Lady Cox Rehabilitation Centre also joins the day’s meaning and considers the main goal to inform the society about the problems faced by the sun people, and why not also about their possible solutions.

In addition to rehabilitation treatment we attach great importance to creating the necessary conditions for a full life for people with such characteristics and making them full members of society.
